Gerry Evans has spent many years leading men’s groups that help men support one another through life’s changes. Now retired and in his eighties, and a member of Penn’s Village, Gerry is starting a small group for retired men who want to connect, share experiences, and feel less alone. This is not a therapy group. It is a friendly and respectful space where men can talk about the opportunities and challenges of this stage of life.

The first meeting is an opportunity to see if the group feels right for you. If there is interest, the group will meet every other week for 12 weeks, with the possibility of continuing.
Many men find that talking with other men helps them feel more connected, supported, and engaged with life.

Join us for a "behind the scenes” tour of research projects in the Ornithology Department of the Academy of Natural Sciences, which is one of the 10 largest and taxonomically most complete bird collections in the world. There are over 205,000 study skins, from over 7,000 species, and over 17,000 tissue samples. According to AI’s summary The Academy’s ornithology collection is significant because “its vast collections provide invaluable resources for understanding avian evolution, disease, conservation, and the impacts of environmental changes like climate change and pollution on bird populations.” Dr Nate Rice, Collection Manager of Ornithology, will be our guide. He will include a focus on the Bird Safe Philly program which includes the lab‘s role in preserving dead birds for research. The ANSP, founded in 1812, is the oldest continuously operating natural history museum in North America. It has become a premier institution for systematic and environmental research that has been conducted on regional, national, and international scales.

$25 per person non-refundable. If unable to attend the registration will be donated to Penn’s Village general fund. This fee does NOT include admission to the museum, just the tour program.

There will be an optional group lunch (private pay) after the museum tour somewhere in the area.

From a childhood in the 50s through an adolescence in the 60s and onward into the 21st century, Virginia Knoud Nalencz’s I See You: Stories from Life presents a collage of memoir and short stories “in some of which I, the writer, may appear in various guises,” the author says in the preface. The book questions the idea of change. The past is immutable, but the way we see it is not. Does writing a life story change the way we see ourselves, and those who affected us, for good or for ill? Might we grow happier, calmer, even wiser, as we grow older? From the sidewalks of New York to the squares of Philadelphia, I See You traces a Boomer-era Pilgrim’s Progress, with cultural touchstones ranging from the Beatles to Galileo, from Princess Diana to Benjamin Franklin.

Bio of presenter: Virginia Knoud Nalencz [who goes by “Jenny”] was born in New York City and educated in convent schools by the Ursuline nuns. She received a B.A. from Manhattanville College, an M.A. in History from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in English from Temple University. She has been a lab assistant in the physiology department at Hunter College of the City of New York and a staff writer at the alumni magazine of Temple University in Philadelphia. In Before Times, she published short stories in little magazines that are now extinct.
For the past six years she has served as facilitator for the Penn’s Village writers’ group, whose members have read and commented on many chapters in I See You. Their life experiences have been particularly valuable in comments on the third section of the book, “In the Footsteps of Ben Franklin,” about moving to Philadelphia from a suburb on the Main Line.

This is a performance duet created by Rhonda Moore, a 69-year-old Black veteran dancer and novice acrobat and Ben Grinberg, a 35-year-old queer Jewish acrobat and novice dancer. Helpful Hints is inspired by the whimsical 1901 book Illustrated Hints for Strength and Health for Busy People by Adrian Peter Schmidt. This project reimagines turn-of-the-century fitness advice through an intergenerational, embodied lens, exploring the evolving definitions of strength, health, and readiness across time and lived experience.
Bio of presenter – Almanac Projects is the producer of Helpful Hints, created by Rhonda Moore and Ben Grinberg. Grinberg and Moore have been collaborating since 2020. As individual artists – Ben Grinberg and Rhonda Moore each have a long history of community practice. Moore’s decades-long career as a dancer, recording artist, and performance maker has spanned geographies from New York City to Verona, Italy, to Philadelphia for over a decade, always including innovative community-informed and community-integrated works of dance. In 2010, inspired by the absurdity of the American immigration system, she created Random Acts of Dance, which, through several iterations brought students, elders, and other community groups out into the street to perform a spontaneous and infectious “random act of dance.” This project was ultimately re-commissioned by Mural Arts Philadelphia and featured in the open of the Mural Mile.
