The Holocaust - What Do We Remember? (V)
We often hear that we must remember the Holocaust so that it will not be repeated. But what exactly are we called upon to remember? Many speak of lessons of the Holocaust, but how are those lessons articulated, and how well do they conform to what actually happened to the Jews of Europe during the 1930s and 1940s? These questions will be at the center of this presentation.
David Engel served for 31 years as Greenberg Professor of Holocaust Studies at New York University, where he is currently a member of the emeritus faculty. Earlier he served as senior lecturer in history and fellow of the Diaspora Research Center at Tel Aviv University. He has also been a member of the Academic Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Author of ten books and more than 100 scholarly articles on various aspects of the Holocaust and modern history, including a standard textbook entitled “The Holocaust: The Third Reich and the Jews,” Professor Engel and his wife Ronit currently reside in Philadelphia, PA.
