The Benefits of Strength Training as We Age

Did you know that as we age, our bodies naturally lose muscle mass?

This can ultimately lead to a lack of independence and a reduced quality of life. In fact, this age-related muscle loss specifically results in a number of age-related ailments, including a higher risk of falls, decreased bone density, reduced blood sugar tolerance, and a steady increase in body fat.

But we can do something about it!  It is scientifically proven that no matter what our age or fitness level, consistently engaging in a strength training program will reverse age-related muscle loss and restore strength and functional abilities.  Strength training has been shown to be one of the most significant factors in maintaining a high quality of life and independence as we age.

How can we safely and effectively incorporate this into our lives and routines and stick with it?  Come learn ways to foster behavioral change and make exercise a habit, even in a virtual world.

Eric Levitan is the founder and CEO of Vivo.  As he witnessed the decline of his parents’ quality of lives as they got older, he realized he wanted to better understand the aging process and help them.  That’s why he started Vivo – to create awareness and a safe, engaging, and impactful program to guide older adults to a safer and healthier life.

Dr. Katie Starr, PhD, is Vivo’s Chief Scientific Officer and an Assistant Professor and scientist at the Duke University School of Medicine.  She has worked with older adults at the world-renowned Cooper Wellness Center, founded by the “father” of aerobics, Kenneth H. Cooper.
