Predicting the Future: What is Artificial Intelligence and How is it Being Applied in Healthcare?

Sept. 11, 2:00 PM • Phila. Chamber of Commerce

By now you have seen many TV ads on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) has influenced our lives through such products and services as self-driving cars, automated manufacturing, cell phone face recognition and voice activated commands.  But did you know that artificial intelligence is also making an inroad into health care?

Just what is artificial intelligence? Where did it start and more importantly, where is it going?  Is it something we should fear or embrace and how will it influence our future life in general and health care in particular?

Come join us on September 11 as many of these questions are answered by Dr. Gary Weissman, MD, an Instructor of Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He will provide an overview of Artificial intelligence (AI), or the ability for machines like computers to learn human intelligence processes, and how it is now used across many settings, including in the analysis of healthcare data. What does AI look like in a healthcare setting? How might it inform provider and patient decision-making? What are its promises and pitfalls?

This talk will offer real-world examples of applications of AI at the bedside and engage community members in a discussion of how AI might impact future care.
