Living with Osteopenia and Osteoporosis

March 24, 2022

Osteo.png

Osteoporosis is often referred to as a silent disease because of its lack of symptoms. In fact, according to the Penn Bone Center, the first symptom of osteoporosis is often a fracture; therefore, it is imperative to evaluate and treat osteoporosis as early as possible, ideally before a fracture occurs.

Dr. Al Mukaddam will speak on the causes and prevention of osteopenia (a condition that begins as you lose bone mass and your bones get weaker) and osteoporosis, and common treatments for both. Dr. Hvisdas will speak on medications used to treat either or both conditions.

(A video recording of their presentations is not available at the request of the presenters)

Dr. Mona Al Mukaddam is Director of the Penn Bone Center, as well as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Penn Medicine. She went to medical school and completed a residency at the American University of Beirut, and an additional residency at the University of Iowa. She is Board certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism.

Dr. Christopher Hvisdas is Lead Pharmacist at the Penn Bone Center and consistently gets high ratings for patient care.
