Everything You Wanted to Know About Diabetes But Were Afraid to Ask… Your Doctor

May 6, 2021

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes disproportionately affects older adults, with approximately 25% of Americans over the age of 60 afflicted with the disease.

The aging of the U.S. population is widely acknowledged as one of the drivers of the diabetes epidemic, which also affects the longevity, functional status, and risk of institutionalization in older patients. Yet many people still don’t quite understand what diabetes is and how to prevent it.

In this presentation, Dr. Schwartz defined the disease and its different types, the complications that it can cause, and the variety of therapies that can be used to treat it. He also took questions from the audience at the end of his presentation.
Stanley Schwartz,MD, was named a TOP DOC by Philadelphia Magazine many times over the years, including 2009, 2010 and 2011, for the treatment of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. For more than 30 years, Dr. Schwartz was an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, most recently directing the Diabetes Program at the Philadelphia Heart Institute.

He is now Emeritus Associate Professor of Medicine at Penn, and currently in private practice in Ardmore, PA. Dr. Schwartz received his MD in 1973 from the University of Chicago, and completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Chicago.
