About ARTZ Philadelphia
ARTZ Philadelphia is dedicated to bringing the arts into the lives of people living with dementia and those who care for them. Through interactive, creative experiences, the organization fosters connection, joy, and meaningful engagement where it matters most—between care partners and the people they love.
Programs include presentations designed specifically for care partners, offering practical ways the arts can strengthen communication and nurture relationships. ARTZ Philadelphia also shares moving stories of participants—individuals living with dementia and their care partners—highlighting how creative expression opens doors to memory, laughter, and belonging.
The organization offers a variety of initiatives, from small-group museum visits and art-making workshops to community-based projects that reduce isolation and celebrate the creativity that continues to flourish, regardless of diagnosis. Each program is guided by the belief that art is not just something to look at or do, but a powerful bridge to human connection.
Biography of Presenter: Dr. Susan Shifrin is the founder and director of ARTZ Philadelphia, an organization dedicated to connecting people living with dementia and their care partners through the arts. An art historian, curator, and longtime advocate for arts accessibility, she was inspired to create ARTZ Philadelphia after witnessing the profound impact of art on visitors with dementia during her years as a museum educator. Susan also cared for her mother, who lived with dementia for nearly twenty years, an experience that deepened her commitment to this work. She is a frequent presenter to professional, academic, and community audiences, and her publications include The Museum as a Site of Caring and Regeneration for People Living with Dementia (2015) and The Museum As Experience (2023).
