Meet Norman: Your New Furry Friend!

We have been reminding you what makes Penn's Village special—it's the community of care YOU have all built. Our volunteers have signed up not just to help, but because they want to be part of a community that looks out for one another. Below are just a few of the ways we can connect you with a neighbor who has offered to lend a hand. If you are eligible for services, don’t hesitate to call or email us with a request—be as descriptive as possible so we can find

the best match for you. And if you’re a volunteer, might you consider expanding the ways you’re willing to help? There are so many ways to make a difference!

Penn’s Village is thrilled to introduce Norman, our therapy dog, who is here to bring joy, comfort, and a few tail wags your way. Whether you’d like a one-on-one visit with him or prefer to join one of his upcoming meet-and-greets, Norman is ready to brighten your day. Spending time with a gentle, loving dog can be a great way to lift your spirits, relieve stress, and simply enjoy the company of a four-legged friend. If you’d like to meet Norman, let us know—we’ll set it up!

Service Reminders:

● Villagers can receive up to three services per week (more under special circumstances).

● Neighbors can try out services twice a year—often for tech help or an appointment escort.

● While we fill most requests, some may take time to match with a volunteer, and occasionally, we may be unable to fulfill a request. We work hard to fill about 95% of requests.

● Volunteers assist in ways a friendly neighbor might. If a request is beyond our scope, we may suggest a professional from our provider/resource list.

This is your reminder that you belong to a community that values every member and believes in supporting each other at all stages. Call the office at 215-925-7333 or email info@pennsvillage.org to tell us how we can find the right connection for you today.

In Our Community

Below is information about upcoming events taking place in the community that might be of interest to Penn's Village members.

Bridge Walk for Peace
 When: April 4, 6:30 AM - 8:30 AM

Where: Ben Franklin Bridge Pedestrian Walkway,243R N 5th St, Philadelphia, PA 19106

Please join us on Friday, April 4 to commemorate the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 18th Annual Bridge Walk for Peace will begin with a sunrise walk across the Ben Franklin Bridge, followed by coffee and a discussion on solutions for achieving peace in the community.

Established in 2008, the Bridge Walk for Peace honors the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which occurred on April 4, 1968 and is the longest running commemoration of its kind in the country. For the past eighteen years, people from throughout the Philadelphia area have gathered at dawn—6:30 AM—to walk across the Ben Franklin Bridge to reach the pinnacle at sunrise—7:00 AM—to offer a prayer for peace and healing.

Following the Walk—at approximately 8:00 AM—participants will disembark from the Bridge to convene at Old St. George’s United Methodist Church—at the foot of the bridge at 235 N. 4th Street—to discuss solutions for achieving peace in the community.

This is a sign-up for participating in the walk and discussion. The event is free and open to the public but participants are encouraged to register.

2025 Keynote: Doris Kearns Goodwin on Leadership in Turbulent Times

Program No. 25201RJ

Join us on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 2 p.m. (ET)/ 11 a.m. (PT), for a special one-hour lecture and Q&A to learn about leadership in difficult times throughout U.S. history.

As part of Road Scholar's 50th Anniversary celebration in 2025, the organization is thrilled to offer this special gift to our participants: a free virtual lecture by Doris Kearns Goodwin, one of the most renowned historians of our time. At a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, as we confront a cascade of crises — concerns about the fragility of our democracy and a deepening political polarization unmatched since the Civil War — Doris Kearns Goodwin offers critical historical context. Not since the 1850s has our nation been so politically divided. Not since the Great Depression and World War II have we faced such a succession of shared hardships. And not since the 1960s have we grappled so intensely with the struggle for social and economic equality. Drawing from her book, “Leadership: In Turbulent Times,” Goodwin transports us back in time to provide perspective and analysis as she helps us understand how the presidents she’s studied most closely — Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson — provide proof that as a country and a people we’ve been through most difficult times before and came through stronger. History, as Goodwin demonstrates, provides lessons, solace and even hope.
