ARTZ Philadelphia – Caregiving Through the Arts While Living with Dementia

This presentation is designed specifically for care partners—spouses, adult children, friends, and family members who provide support. We explore how shared art experiences can: Strengthen emotional bonds Provide moments of relief and joy in the caregiving journey Open up new ways of communicating when words are difficult Remind both care partners and loved ones that creativity and curiosity remain alive and well
Presenter Information
Dr. Susan Shifrin is the founder and director of ARTZ Philadelphia. An art historian, curator, and educator, she earned her PhD from Bryn Mawr College and has worked in museums along the East Coast. She was inspired to start ARTZ Philadelphia after hosting programs for visitors with dementia and witnessing how art sparked connection, creativity, and joy. A longtime care partner for her mother, who lived with dementia for nearly twenty years, Susan has shared her insights widely through talks and publications, including The Caring Museum (2015) and The Museum as Experience (2023).
