A Chat with City Councilmember Rue Landau

Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 2:00 pm

MacColl Room, First Presbyterian Church

201 S. 21st St.

What is the role of a City Councilmember in Philadelphia?  How does the City Council work?  Can Councilmembers make a difference in improving the quality of life in the city?  Come and learn more from Rue Landau, a City Councilmember-at-Large, about her experience so far and her vision for Philadelphia. This will be a great opportunity to have an “up close and personal” chat with one of the city’s most dynamic leaders.

Rue Landau is a civil rights and housing attorney, a public school parent and the first openly LGBTQ+ member of Philadelphia City Council. She started her career as an activist and housing organizer, and for more than a decade, Councilmember Landau worked as an attorney at Community Legal Services, helping low-income renters in Philadelphia avoid illegal eviction from their affordable housing. Later, Councilmember Landau served as the director of both the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) and the Fair Housing Commission (FHC), the city’s civil rights and housing enforcement agencies. After winning the November 2023 general election, she plans to use her years of knowledge, skills, and relationships to serve all Philadelphians as an at-large member of Philadelphia City Council.

Councilmember Landau’s roots in Philadelphia run deep. A proud graduate of Temple Law School, Councilmember Landau has served on numerous boards of non-profit and community organizations and currently is a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Philadelphia LGBTQ Bar Association. Councilmember Landau is married to her wife, Kerry, and together they live with their son, a public school student, in Bella Vista – right around the corner from Councilmember Landau’s identical twin sister.
